Although historians believe that humans lived in the area since 6,000 B.C., it is better known for being very important farmland for the Incan Empire. Its rich soil was a perfect place to plant the crops that nourished the ancient people and was said to produce Peru’s best corn. The surrounding area boasts colorful indigenous markets, historic ruins and spectacular sites of numerous peaks, ranges and valleys of the Peruvian Andes. The Iconic Machu Picchu ~ Aguas Calientes, Peru
An UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered one of the seven wonders of the world, Machu Picchu is the ultimate bucket list destination. This ancient city gives us a glimpse into the intricate story of one of the world’s greatest empires, the infamous Incas. Machu Picchu is a mystery because the Incans abandoned the city intact during the Spanish conquest. The Spanish never found the community and it wasn’t until 1911 that is was discovered by outsiders. Some say the inhabitants of this ancient village left, fleeing the threat of European disease, but the truth of their departure is as mythical as the people themselves. Take a walk through time and listen to the whispering winds of the majestic Andes as they blow through this breathtaking ancient city and maybe the secret will be revealed.
City of Gold ~ Cusco, Peru
As you wander the cobblestone streets of Cusco, it feels as though you’ve stepped back in time. Intricate Incan walls topped with colonial Spanish architecture tells the story of the turbulent conquest of South America and depicts the living history that still remains today. Impressive cathedrals, boutique art galleries, and exquisite Peruvian food line the streets and give way to many easy and interesting ways to pass the time. Lake Titicaca– Puno, Peru
At 12,507ft above sea level, Lake Titicaca is revered as being the highest navigable lake in the world. With its stunning blue water, rich local cultures and mysterious ancient history, this lake is well worth a visit. A variety of communities and cultures still inhabit this lake region and include the UNESCO heritage site of the island of Taquille where world famous, intricate weavings are still produced by the local community. Lake Titicaca is also known for the floating islands of Uros which are handmade by the locals using reeds from the lake and provide a peaceful floating home for the Uros people. From unforgettable sunsets to mysterious underwater ruins, Lake Titicaca will provide you with stories to share with your friends for many years to come.
Mysteries of the Peruvian Desert ~ Paracas, Peru
The Paracas National Reserve is a mysterious desert landscape along the coast that holds a plethora of wonders. Here you can experience the flora and fauna of the biological marine reserve of the Ballestas Islands or visit the ancient wonder of the Nazca Lines, created over 3000 years ago. Each Nazca design is created by one line that can only be seen by air and the reason for their creation remains a mystery. Some say the Nazca tribe had help from aliens to build these mysterious formations. Top off this experience with a private catered meal under the stars in the desert.
